Earlier this week, 53 students from around the nation gathered in Washington for the 2010 Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest, an annual event that encourages the love of spoken word among young people. The contest was created by the Poetry Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, which are both funders of the NewsHour. This year's winner, Amber Rose Johnson, is a 17-year-old high school junior from Providence, R.I., who won the final round of competition with her rendition of 'For My People' by Margaret Walker. I talked with Johnson from her home earlier this week: |
