Filmmaker Andrew Jarecki is well-known for documentaries like Capturing the Friedmans and Catfish (which he produced) that tell the secret stories of people who really aren't what they seem. In his latest film, Jarecki, who says he has always been drawn to true stories, has picked to re-imagine an infamous unsolved mystery involving a wealthy and powerful New York family. In All Good Things actor Ryan Gosling plays David Marks, the heir to a major New York real estate dynasty, based on a real man named Robert Durst.

In 1982, Durst was suspected of murdering his wife Kathie (played in the movie by Kirsten Dunst), when the young woman disappeared.Robert Durst was later suspected in the 2000 murder of a friend of his wife's, and was charged for the murder on a 71-year old man in Texas, but was found not guilty, serving jail time for simply dismembering the corpse.

In reaction to Jarecki's film, the Durst Organization had threatened legal action, but has not filed a lawsuit claiming defamation.
