Nominations for the Academy Awards were announced Tuesday in Los Angeles, via The New York Times. The most nominated films were The King's Speech with 12, True Grit received 10, and The Social Network and Inception with eight each.

Amongst all the big Hollywood contenders for best picture were two independent films: the low-budget Ozark Mountains thriller A Winter's Bone, and The Kids Are Alright, a family drama set in California, which both premiered last January at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010. Jeffrey Brown talked to Winter's Bone director Debra Granik in May, and to Lisa Cholodenko about The Kids Are Alright.

Jeff also talked to documentary nominees Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington for their work on Restrepo, as well as Lucy Walker, who actually found out she had made the first cut for an Oscar for her film Waste Land in our make-up room before taping that conversation.

The Associated Press considers the foreign films up for awards, as well as some of the notable films that didn't get nominations.

The Miami Herald covers a different set of film award nominations: the worst of the worst, those movies nominated for Razzies.
