Here are some arts and culture stories from public broadcasting stations around the nation.

 

- The Escher String Quartet gave grocery shoppers at Zabar's on the Upper West Side of Manhattan a special performance on Wednesday. They played the first movement of Beethoven's "Serioso" quartet in front of the seafood counter. The surprise performance was part of WQXR's chamber music festival, Trout Week.

- Musician Teddy Thompson, son of Richard and Linda Thompson, was born into a family of folk royalty, but has made a name for himself. Thompson talks about his most recent album in an interview on New Hampshire Public Radio's Word of Mouth.

- Read an interview with designer and musician Alexander Chen from WNYC on how he converted the 1972 New York Subway map into an online experience.

 
- PRI's Studio 360 reports on one of the newest additions to the endangered species list: the bookstore.

- Listen to writer Benjamin Hale read a passage from his latest novel, "The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore", a tale of a self-conscious chimpanzee. KQED also interviewed Hale as part of their literature series, The Writer's Block.

 
- Visual artist and sculptor Italo Scanga (1932-2001) is known for creating works out of found objects. He is now being honored in an exhibit at the Oceanside Museum of Art in Oceanside, Calif. Listen to a discussion about the artist and his work's from San Diego's KPBS.

 
- Read an interview with filmmakers Clay Liford and Eric Steele, creators of the new independently released film Wuss. KERA's Art & Seek interviewed them at last month's SXSW Film Festival.

 
- Watch a profile of Minnesota metal artist Lisa Elias as she makes a public drinking fountain for Downtown Minneapolis. It's part of Twin City Public Television's arts series, MN Original.

 
- Chicago organist Lori Moreland has been called up to the big leagues. The White Sox has hired Moreland, an organist at Our Lady of Knock church outside of Chicago, as the new home game, via WBEZ.
