Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad's play, the film 'Incendies' is an unusual family drama set in contemporary Canada and the recent civil wars in the Middle East. After the death of their mother, two French Canadian siblings travel to the Middle East to discover their mother's history and secrets: a father who they've never had contact with and a brother who they didn't know existed.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was released in U.S. theaters Friday to widespread praise. I recently spoke to its director, Denis Villeneuve, in our newsroom:
