UPDATE | March 16, 2012 -- It was revealed by public radio's Marketplace and This American Life that parts of Mike Daisey's story that he told to This American Life, the NewsHour, other news outlets and his theater audience were not true. Click here for an important update to the conversation below.

Original post:

Obsession, lust, a bit of espionage, a lot of laughs, and some serious questions of ethics and working conditions.

The subject is that gadget in your pocket, on your desk, or in your hand: the many ways you've come to love and even need it, and the human costs that go into making it.

All of these questions are raised by one man, sitting at a table in an hour-and-a-half monologue titled, The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs, now at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre here in Washington as part of a multi-city tour.

Creator and performer Mike Daisey joined me in our studio to talk about it:

Editor's Note: After this conversation was taped, we received an email from Steve Jobs responding to our inquiry about the play and the issues it raised. Mr. Jobs provided several documents that he said contain Apple's position. You can find Apple's official stance on the responsibility of suppliers to provide safe working conditions here and their Supplier Responsibility 2011 Progress Report here.
