Richard Rodriguez talks to chief arts correspondent Jeffrey Brown about his new collection of essays, “Darling.”

Richard Rodriguez used to contribute video essays to PBS NewsHour and now he has just published a new collection of written essays titled “Darling: A Spiritual Biography,” his meditations on religion and sexuality in the wake of 9/11.

Looking for the “fleshy idea,” Rodriguez says his writing can be entertaining, but it’s not easy. “I require a reader,” he continued. “I require you to complete my sentence, that is to understand it.” Rodriguez takes a thoughtful approach to religion. He doesn’t think his collection is a effort of “excessive piety…it’s a work of the mind working, thinking, wondering.”

Watch an in-depth interview with Rodriguez on the Thursday broadcast. You can live stream the show at 6 p.m. EST on our Ustream channel or check your local PBS station’s schedule.
