Nigeria's Political History

Formed from numerous tribal kingdoms and states, modern Nigeria came into existance as a British colony in 1906. In 1960, England granted the nation its independence. Since then, Nigeria has had miliary governments interspersed with short-lived periods of democratic rule. The elections this weekend is the first move towards civilian rule since 1983.
