The conflict
between India and Pakistan began August 15, 1947, when Great Britain
dismantled its Indian Empire and partitioned India into two independent
nations.
The Asian sub-continent was split into mostly Hindu India and mostly
Muslim
Pakistan. But the process left the fate of the Kashmir province undecided,
fueling
a dispute between the two newly-divided regions.
The partitioning
initially caused extensive rioting as Hindus and Muslims were caught
on the wrong side of newly-drawn borders. In recent years, with the
two countries becoming nuclear powers, the bitter rivalry has intensified
into a full-blown arms race.
