Since it gained its independence in 1945, Indonesia has been lead military dictatorships, neo-communist regimes and liberal democracies, but only three presidents. As the archipelago swears in its fourth chief executive, supporters of the new government hope that Indonesia can escape the autocratic nature of its past and that free elections of the future will not be as few and far between.
