CHRISTINE HELMS
DIRECTOR OF COUNTRY ANALYSIS FOR THE PETROLEUM FINANCE COMPANY
Christine Helms is Director of Country Analysis at the Petroleum Finance Company where she is responsible for the political economic studies of oil-producing countries for the Market Intelligence Service. Dr. Helms received her D.Phil from The Oriental Institute at Oxford University in England in 1979; and an honors B.A. in Anthropology and Sociology from Oberlin College in Ohio in 1973.Before joining Petro Finance in 1995, Dr. Helms was a senior editor at Energy Compass; an independent foreign policy analyst and consultant for international corporations; special assistant in international affairs to the assistant secretary of research at the Smithsonian Institution; and a research associate in the foreign policy program at the Brookings Institution.
Her major publications include Arabism and Islam: Stateless Nations and Nationless States, Iraq- Eastern Flank of the Arab World, and The Cohesion of Saudi Arabia: Evolution of Political Identity. Dr. Helms has also written some 250 chapters and articles for books, encyclopedias, professional journals and specialized publications. She has had opinion pieces published in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Baltimore Sun. A number of pieces have been translated into other languages.
Other professional activities include testifying before the Senate Arms Services Committee and advising President George Bush during the Gulf war crisis. Dr. Helms has provided political analysis on current events for all major U.S. and foreign print and broadcast news media. She has been an advisor to The National Geographic Society and participated as an expert witness in two international legal trials. Representative speaking venues include the Library of Congress, Office of Technology Assessment, American Association for the Advancement of Science, numerous universities, military bases and Institutional organizations. She has also served on the boards of The Middle East Institute, The Journal of Defense and Diplomacy, and the development bad of St. Hilda's College, Oxford University. Dr. Helms is widely traveled in the Middle East where she has interviewed many key political leaders.
