REP. PAT ROBERTS
[R] KANSAS - 1ST DISTRICT
First District Congressman Pat Roberts, Republican of Dodge City, is the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, the first Republican chairman since 1954. Roberts has served on the Agriculture Committee since he was first elected in 1980.
He is currently serving his eighth term representing the 66 counties in the western two-thirds of Kansas. Roberts is also a member of the newly renamed House Oversight Committee, and he is a founding member of the Rural Health Care Coalition, a bipartisan group working to improve health care in rural areas.
He is also a founding member of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on Unfunded Mandates to eliminate the federal government's practice of forcing state and local governments to shoulder the cost of federal programs.
His efforts have been recognized by numerous business and agriculture groups. He is an honorary American Farmer, the highest degree awarded by the Future Farmers of America, and has been honored by the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers as the 1993 Wheat Man of the Year.
Roberts received the Kansas Farm Bureau award for Distinguished- Service to Agriculture and the Production Credit Associations Distinguished Award for Leadership in Agriculture.
He has also received the Golden Carrot Award from Public Voice, a consumer group, for his work agriculture and food safety. Pat Roberts is a fourth-generation Kansan born April 20, 1936, in Topeka. He is the son of the late Wes Roberts, Chairman of the Republican National Committee under President Eisenhower.
His great-grandfather, J.W. Roberts, founded the Oskaloosa Independent, the state's second oldest newspaper. Following his graduation from Kansas State University in 1959, Roberts served four years with the U.S. Marine Corps, then he spent five years reporting and editing Arizona newspapers.
He joined the staff of Senator Frank Carlson in 1967 until the Senator's retirement. In 1969, Roberts became the a administrative assistant to First District Congressman Keith Sebelious. Roberts and his wife, Franki have three children: David, 23, Ashleigh 20, a KU student and Anne-Wesley, 17, who is currently in high school.
