JUDY WOODRUFF: In other news today: Wall Street staged a major rally on rising earnings from Cisco Systems and falling unemployment claims. The Dow Jones industrial average gained nearly 204 points, to close just under 10006. The Nasdaq rose more than 49 points, to close at 2105.
The U.S. is now facing a shortage of seasonal flu vaccine. The New York Times reported today that the focus on the H1N1 swine flu virus has increased demand for all flu shots. Federal health officials said that vaccine-makers cannot produce more than usual, because they're busy turning out swine flu vaccine.
Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik has pleaded guilty to lying to White House officials and committing tax crimes. He appeared today in federal court in White Plains, New York. Kerik was hailed as a hero after the 9/11 attacks in New York. He was nominated to be head of Homeland Security in 2004, but withdrew amid accusations he lied about taxes and other issues.
A Democratic climate change bill has cleared a key U.S. Senate committee. It calls for cutting current greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by the year 2020. Republicans boycotted today's vote. They insisted that the projected cost of the legislation needed more study. The bill now goes before the full Senate. The House narrowly passed its version back in June.
In Pakistan, Taliban fighters were warned today to stand fast against a government assault. The fighting in South Waziristan began in mid-October, aimed at driving militants from their main stronghold. In an intercepted message, the Pakistani Taliban leader warned his fighters -- quote -- "Don't look for excuses to run away from the fighting. Such people will go to hell."
Saudi Arabia launched a rare military attack against Shiite rebels in northern Yemen today, this just one day after rebels seized a Saudi town near the border. At least one person was killed and 11 people were wounded in the attack yesterday. |
