Karim Rashid, a furniture, lighting, textile and tableware designer, studied design at Ottawa's Carleton University before opening Karim Rashid Industrial Design in Toronto in 1991. He moved his company to New York in 1993.

Projects include product design for Umbra and packaging for Issey Miyake.

Rashid has taught at Philadelphia's University of the Arts, New York's Pratt Institute and Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.
