"Madeline Jones' Wonderful Garden"
Title
"Madeline Jones' Wonderful Garden," 1977
Description
Bearden's practice of pursuing thematic series was well established by the late 1960s, a period when recollections of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, provided his primary motifs. Although he left Charlotte as a small child, Bearden's return visits nurtured his memory and imagination. His collages from this period are filled with images of folk musicians, farmers, families, country kitchens and other reminders of the region. As he said, "I paint what people did when I was a little boy, like the way they got up in the morning."

Collage of various papers with ink, graphite and surface abrasion on fiberboard.
