violence continues. On August 15th, the Real IRA, a splinter republican
group, explodes a bomb in the town of Omagh -- killing 29 and wounding
more than 200 in the worst act of violence ever in Northern Ireland.
In September, Northern Ireland elects members to the newly formed Northern Ireland Assembly. The Ulster Unionist Party receives the largest portion of the vote and 28 of the 108 seats in the Assembly. The SDLP, a moderate Catholic party, wins 24 and Sinn Fein garners 18 seats.
