Deregulation

Maryland is in the midst of shifting to a deregulated system. The law, enacted in 1999, allows for consumer choice for those served by traditional power companies by July 2002 and all electric co-operatives by July 2003. Maryland also provided for a rate cut of between three and 7.5 percent and a rate cap for four years after deregulation.
