Deregulation

Michigan adopted legislation in June 2000 to offer customer choice in electricity suppliers. The law offers consumer choice as of January 2001, guarantees a five percent rate cut through 2003 and funds a consumer education and protection program. The rules also require the state’s largest utilities to increase generation to ensure future supplies. Utilities must also join a regional transmission commission or sell their power lines.
