The state's Public Utilities Commission does not see deregulation as a pressing need. It cites a 1999 University of South Dakota study sponsored by rural electric cooperatives that indicates rates could rise under deregulation. The PUC regulates rates, territorial boundaries and service policies for investor-owned utilities, but does not control rates charged by cooperative and municipal utilities.More InformationDepartment of Energy Information on South DakotaState Public Utilities Information Return to Power: An Online NewsHour Special Report |
