Deregulation

The Tennessee Valley Authority, a federal utility, serves almost all of Tennessee, providing customers with power through local utilities. The U.S. government would therefore be involved in any deregulation of the electricity industry in Tennessee. A commission created by Tennessee's General Assembly in 1997, however, continues to examine deregulation. The Tennessee Regulatory Authority also issued a report in 1999 that looked at issues surrounding restructuring given possible different degrees of deregulation in the future.
