Talks Open U.N. General Assembly Meeting
International leaders met in New York Monday for the 61st
annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. Chief among
the topics to be discussed was the ongoing crisis in Sudan's
Darfur region, where more than 200,000 people are estimated
to have died since 2003 in violence and a resulting humanitarian
crisis. Timothy Wirth of the United Nations Foundation and
Republican Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota join Jim Lehrer
to discuss Darfur and a variety of other issues facing the
troubled world body.

Approves Human Rights Council Against U.S. Wishes

and voted overwhelmingly to establish a Human Rights Council
that will have higher status and greater accountability
than the existing Human Rights Commission, a body highly
criticized for its failure to stop human rights offenses
and for admitting rights abusers.
