January 12, 2002 — The Israeli military checkpoint near the refugee camp at Kalandia on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Passing through this gateway to Ramallah and West Bank points north, some of the Palestinians pictured here walk north towards Kalandia. Heading south out of the West Bank, motorists are sometimes forced to wait for hours as Israeli Defense Forces check each vehicle and driver.
