British Mandate
1920 Iraq is formed as a mandate of the League of Nations, under British administration.
1921 The British appoint Faisal the First as head of the kingdom of Iraq.
1924 An elected Iraqi assembly reluctantly signs a treaty with Great Britain allowing the British to keep military bases inside Iraq and granting British right to veto Iraqi legislation.
1930 Iraq enters into a treaty establishing a 25-year alliance with Britain.
