A second earthquake in as many days rocked western Turkey today, injuring hundreds and collapsing buildings, according to Turkey's private NTV television.

The quake's magnitude was at least 6.5, according to the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo. It was centered in Duzce, 115 miles east of Istanbul.

The quake struck at 6:57 p.m. local time, and was followed by at least three aftershocks with magnitudes greater than 5, said Ahmet Mete Isikara, head of Istanbul's Kandilli Observatory.

In the town of Bolu, the tremblor set off explosions in some buildings, triggering fires and severing the road to Istanbul, police chief Ugur Gur said. He called for urgent medical aid from the capital, Ankara, about 160 miles to the east.

Another earthquake hit western Turkey Thursday. A 5.7-magnitude aftershock killed one and injured 171.

Western Turkey is still recovering from an Aug. 17 earthquake that killed at least 17,000.
