JIM LEHRER: And in other news today, U.S. forces suffered new losses in Afghanistan and Iraq. Three Americans were killed north of the Afghan capital of Kabul when insurgents ambushed their convoy. And in northern Iraq, a U.S. soldier was killed in a grenade attack during a patrol in Kirkuk.

A Brazilian navy helicopter has recovered the first wreckage from the Air France plane that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. But the airline said today there were no signs of human remains and no hope of finding survivors. Debris was spotted off northern Brazil, where the jetliner disappeared Sunday night en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. There were 228 people aboard.

A trial began today for two American journalists being held in North Korea. Laura Ling and Euna Lee were arrested near the border with China on March 17th. They're accused of crossing into the country illegally. They could face 10 years in a labor camp if convicted.

On the U.S. economy, the number of Americans collecting unemployment benefits fell last week for the first time in 20 weeks. That news, plus a run-up in energy and bank stocks, helped Wall Street.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained nearly 75 points to close at 8,750. The Nasdaq rose 24 points to close at 1,850.
