Conservative commentator Pat Buchanan and Iowa physicist John Hagelin vied for the Reform Party presidential nomination in a bitter contest that split the party and plunged the convention into disarray.

Unsuccessful bid for Republican presidential nomination in 1992, 1996.

Education:
Bachelor's degree from Georgetown University; master's degree in journalism, Columbia University.

Positions:
Abortion: Opposes abortion rights, would appoint only anti-abortion judges to Supreme Court.

Affirmative Action: Opposes.

Education: Advocates eliminating U.S. Department of Education.

Campaign finance reform: Would eliminate corporate and PAC donations, raise individual contribution limit, restrict out-of-district contributions. Supports states' right to impose term limits.

Foreign policy: Would end all foreign aid, except in case of natural disasters. Advocates withdrawal from United Nations, withdrawing from multilateral peacekeeping missions.

Guns: "No compromise" on gun rights.

Immigration: Would reduce immigration by half, fortify Mexican border, aggressively "introduce" immigrants to American culture, English language.

Military: Supports stronger military, national missile defense.

Taxes: 16 percent flat tax on income over $35,000.

Trade: Opposes normal trade relations with China, opposes NAFTA and GATT agreements.

Career:
Quantum physicist. Director and founder, Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy.

Education:
Master's and doctoral degrees, Harvard University.

Political Experience:
Founded Natural Law Party. Ran for president in 1992 and 1996 on Natural Law Party ticket.

Age 46
Divorced
Home: Fairfield, Iowa

Positions:
Abortion: Supports abortion rights.

Campaign finance reform: Would eliminate PACs and soft money, public funding of campaigns.

Crime: Says "get tough" policy has not worked. Supports rehabilitation and crime prevention programs rather than longer sentences and more prisons.

Environment: Advocates reduction in use of pesticides and fertilizer in agriculture, moratorium on genetically engineered food, development of alternative fuels.

Health care: Focus on prevention, improving health habits.

Guns: Supports gun rights.

Military: Would reduce military involvement abroad, decrease military aid. Opposes missile defense.

Taxes: Supports flat tax, deep tax cuts.
