President Bush signs into law the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), which calls on museums to return ancient human remains to modern Native American tribes. The legislation responds to complaints about widespread 19th-century grave robbing that fed a booming interest among museums and universities in early skeletal remains. The law generally requires that Native American remains found on federal or tribal lands be transferred to kindred tribes.
