June: U.S. Magistrate John Jelderks puts the lawsuit on hold. He asks the government to review the law and reconsider whether Kennewick Man should be transferred to the Native American tribes.

1998
March: The Department of the Interior agrees to assist the Army Corps in its legal and archaeological review.

October: Kennewick Man transferred to Seattle's Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture for safekeeping.

1999
February: The Department of the Interior begins an initial examination of Kennewick Man.
