PROUD FATHER

Some words from a very proud father, 27-year-old Kenny McCaughey. He's the father of eight children, seven of them born Wednesday. He and his wife, Bobbi, already had a two-year-old daughter, Macala. He talked to reporters at the Missionary Baptist Church in his hometown of Carlisle, Iowa.
KENNY McCAUGHEY: I'd like to all welcome you here to the Lord's house. I just wanted to say this is one of the most blessed events that I have ever encountered. I'll be taking just a couple of questions for now. I'd like to say that Bobbi is doing very well, and we're--just like I say--just trusting in God to provide in all that we have because He says in His word that all will--that He'll provide our needs according to His riches and glory.
REPORTER: How do the babies look to you? How do the babies look?
KENNY McCAUGHEY: Very healthy. Very good.
REPORTER: And how did your other daughter react?
KENNY McCAUGHEY: I brought her down yesterday, and she just kind of sat there in my arms and "Baby. Baby."
REPORTER: You've gotten commitments for a van, for groceries, for--perhaps even for a brand new home. That's a wonderful thing. But you're going to need people. Do you feel like you've got the community, you've got commitments?
KENNY McCAUGHEY: Yes. I think that'll be taken care of.
REPORTER: What was your reaction when you found out you were having seven babies?
KENNY McCAUGHEY: What's that again?
REPORTER: What was your reaction when you found out you were having seven babies?
KENNY McCAUGHEY: Just--
REPORTER: What are your hopes now for your family, and what are your fears, frankly?
KENNY McCAUGHEY: Well, the big fear is that this does not turn into a big show. This is my family. That's what I want it to be, and it's just going to be us, and we're not on for display. This is just--I just--God could have given us one, but God decided to give us seven. And that is my commission as a father to raise them, and try to raise them in a normal Christian home.
JIM LEHRER: Kenny McCaughey, father of septuplets born yesterday in Iowa.
