The centerpiece of By the People's efforts in 2005 was Deliberation Week, which ran from October 22-29. PBS stations and their community group partners, community colleges, and others hosted dialogues on healthcare and education.

PBS broadcast a special one-hour program, anchored by The NewsHour's Ray Suarez, highlighting citizen discussions on healthcare and education taking place during Deliberation Week, October 22-29, 2005.

PBS stations sponsored more than 20 local television broadcasts, four radio programs, and more than 130 events in 2004. KERA (Dallas, TX) featured NewsHour anchor Jim Lehrer discussing "A World of News."

Connecticut PTV and Gateway Community College hosted a community summit on October 22, 2005, in New Haven, which focused on equal access to education The station contributed footage to the By the People national PBS broadcast on November 10, 2005.

World Affairs Forum
November 2004
Stamford, Conn. - The World Affairs Forum, affiliated with the World Affairs Councils of America, supported a panel entitled, "Leading a Better World," on how the next administration can create a better environment where democracy and freedom can flourish. The panel consisted of a moderator and foreign policy experts.

Middlesex Community College

Middlesex Community College (Bedford and Lowell, MA) held two dialogues during Deliberation Week-one on the Bedford campus and one in Lowell. The focus was: "What knowledge or skills will students need most to be effective citizens in our world in the future?" Campus and community members participated in a conversation about our role as citizens, including response to those in need and recent issues raised by Hurricane Katrina.

MA Foundation for the Humanities
September-December, 2004
Northampton, Mass. - The Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities supported "Understanding the Middle East," a reading, lecture and discussion program which ran in 15 public libraries across Massachusetts. Local scholars lead discussions based on background readings available at public libraries.

Greenfield, Mass. - GCC's Response Initiative, a committee of faculty, students and staff formed after 9/11, hosted "Our World and Us: A Campus and Community Day of Dialogue on Foreign Policy and Local Concerns."
