The centerpiece of By the People's efforts in 2005 was Deliberation Week, which ran from October 22-29. PBS stations and their community group partners, community colleges, and others hosted dialogues on healthcare and education.

one-hour program, anchored by The NewsHour's Ray Suarez, highlighting
citizen discussions on healthcare and education taking place during
Deliberation Week, October 22-29, 2005.

television broadcasts, four radio programs, and more than 130
events in 2004. KERA (Dallas, TX) featured NewsHour anchor Jim
Lehrer discussing "A World of News."

Center
November 2004
The Minnesota International Center, an affiliate of
the National Council for International Visitors, in
Minneapolis held a Reunion and Re-engagement of the
BTP 2004 Citizen Deliberators. The event comprised
a panel and small group discussions among the January
Citizen Deliberation invitees and other community members,
including young adults.
WDSE/Duluth, Minnesota
Ongoing
WDSE in Duluth, Minnesota is using a 2005 By the People outreach grant to support a project focused on "Challenges to K-1 2 Schools in the Northland" which through engagement with a variety of key stakeholders has involved more than 2000 individuals. Groups participating in the project include school/district administrators, teachers, high school students, parents and the University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Education (second largest teacher preparation program in the state), with each group providing their perceptions of the challenges to education regarding the University and WDSE are jointly preparing an article for publication in the Phi Delta Kappa national monthly magazine, the Kappan, on the research process. The station took advantage of the By the People November 10 national broadcast to promote their work and lead into their local broadcast the following evening launching the discussion among stakeholder groups.

Kansas City's KCPT
and Consensus held a community summit on October
22, 2005, focusing on healthcare cost and access,
prescription drugs, and medical research. The
station contributed footage to the By the People
national PBS broadcast on November 10, 2005.
LWV of Kansas
City/Jackson, Clay & Platte Counties will
continue the Deliberation Week discussions on
the healthcare by hosting a follow up discussion
on November 15, 2005.

at stake in the presidential election with the
goal of illustrating public opinion at large at

Policy Center held a community summit in Kearney.
The event focused on "What educational services
should Nebraska public schools provide?" The station
contributed footage to the By the People national
PBS broadcast on November 10, 2005.

Lincoln, NE--Leadership Lincoln, affiliated with
the Community Leadership Association, the Lincoln
Journal Star, and the University of Nebraska
Public Policy Center joined forces to sponsor
"A Community Conversation: Future of Lincoln,"
on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The event gave about 50 randomly selected participants
the chance to discuss their views about the city's
future development plans and quality of life.
The project was sponsored by the Cooper Foundation
and the Woods Charitable Fund.

Lincoln, NE. - the Nebraska Humanities Council sponsored
"Capitol Forum on America's Future," a joint effort
of the Council, the Nebraska secretary of state, and
the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown
University (Choices program). Capitol Forum is an experimental
civic education initiative designed to encourage students
to analyze, discuss and evaluate the nation's future
in light of a changing international environment.
