By the People: America in the World is an initiative created by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions to enhance the national conversation on important issues of the day. Major funding for BTP is provided by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.BTP staff preparing to speak Additional funding comes from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. BTP is nonpartisan and does not support any particular policy, position or viewpoint. Its sole purpose is to encourage informed dialogue.

MacNeil/Lehrer Productions produces The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer, which airs weeknights on more than 300 local PBS stations, as well as other programs for public, commercial and cable television. MLP produced complete broadcast coverage of the 2004 Democratic and Republican national conventions for PBS. Other recent television programs produced by MLP include Debating Our Destiny: A History of Presidential Debate; LadyBird, a profile of LadyBird Johnson; and Do You Speak American?, hosted by Robert MacNeil.
