Online NewsHour: Campaigns Under Scrutiny

How's It Playing:
Bob Welch, Wisconsin State Senator
October 10, 1997

Bob Welch was first elected to the State Senate in 1995. Born and raised on a Christmas tree farm in Redgranite, he is a land surveyor by profession. He entered the State Assembly as a Representative in 1984. He currently chairs the Committee for Review of Administrative Rules. Senator Welch is married and has three children.

The investigation is big news in Washington, but how's it playing around the country.

A closer look at the issues really under scrutiny by the Congress.

Bob Welch Maybe it's the water in Washington that makes the hard chargers timid. For whatever reason, Senator Thompson has decided to set aside the growing pile of evidence that indicates severe breeches of existing campaign finance law on the part of the Democrats. Instead, he has bowed to Democrat pressure to look at the overall problems of the system, specifically with "soft money."

He has decided to heed the call of panic-stricken Democrats who would rather focus on changing the system than enforcing the existing laws. It's as if upon discovering a dead body, they have shouted "Don't worry about investigating and prosecuting the murder, instead focus on preventing future killings."

Wisconsin Seeing as how the Senate Hearings are moving in another direction, Al Gore and President Clinton should be investigated by a special prosecutor. It's seems foolish to consider passing new campaign finance laws if existing laws are broken without consequence.
