| THE GRASSROOTS REACTOctober 31, 1997 The Democratic Party has come under fire for its actions and fund-raising during the 1996 election. But how is it affecting the local volunteers? This week two Democrats give their opinions. Toody Healy of Massachusetts argues that "the well is running dry" and that Republican simply want to attack the Democrats not improve the system. Steve Fogleman of Maryland is disappointed that, " few of the members of Congress from either party are able to fix the problem, since they are suckled by the system they now denigrate." THE GRASSROOTS REACTOctober 10, 1997 We hear this week from two Republican activists concerning their opinions of the news coming out of Washington. Wisconsin State Senator Bob Welch wants to know why Sen. Fred Thompson has let up on the DNC fund-raising investigation to discuss reform and North Dakotan John Korsmo argues, "Our political system does not need better rules; it needs better people as politicians."
With the hearings and reform debate reaching their apex, we get reaction from Arizona and Indiana. Walt Nett of the Arizona Star and David Haase of The Indianapolis Star & News discuss how it is playing in their areas.
THE GRASSROOTS REACTAugust 10, 1997 The hearings into DNC and RNC fund-raising has turned up the heat on the national parties, but how is the story impacting local volunteers and activists? We hear from Tim Knopp, a Republican from Oregon, and Art Noonan, a Democrat from Montana. Mr. Knopp outlines exactly why the American public should be shocked and outraged at the scandal. Mr. Noonan discusses why he is ashamed of both parties' leaders.
A month into the hearings we hear how the story is playing in Florida and Utah. We get the perspectives of Tom Fiedler, political editor of The Miami Herald, and Judy Fahys, political reporter at The Salt Lake Tribune.
This week we hear from the Midwest and the West Coast. Donna Price, Managing Editor of the Alliance Times-Herald (NE), and Robert Marhsall Wells, Columnist for the Tacoma, WA News Tribune, report on how the hearings are playing in their neck of the woods. THE GRASSROOTS REACTJuly 20, 1997 In an effort to see how these hearings are affecting the grassroots of the two parties, we have brought together a panel of delegates to last year's national conventions. This week we hear from two Republicans and Two Democrats. Mary Ellen Early, a Democrat from Los Angeles, writes about the dangers of over-regulating campaigns. Joyce Haas, a Pennsylvania Republican, discusses what the Senate is really investigating. Randy Horeuichi, a Democrat from Salt Lake City, writes on the need for public financing of campaigns. Finally Hans von Spakovsky, a Georgia Republican, vents his anger at Senator John Glenn and the broadcast networks.
This week we hear from the Upper Midwest and the Great Lakes region. Bob White, the editorial page editor of the Cincinnati Post (OH), and Don Davis, Bismarck Tribune (ND) political reporter, report on how the hearings are playing in their neck of the woods. | ||||||||
