August 14, 1996 Governor George E. Pataki of New York
Speech nominating Jack Kemp
What a great convention. And I have good news this evening. Even good news for President Clinton. Mr. Clinton, next year Bob Dole and Jack Kemp are going to cut your taxes fifteen percent. To my fellow Republicans, to all Americans, the good news is that Jack Kemp is going to make a great Vice President.
With Jack Kemp as Bob Dole's Vice President, we have two leaders who are firmly committed to smaller government, lower taxes, and a better America. Jack Kemp is a man with a vision for America; a vision of optimism that's grounded, not in government, but in a fundamental faith in the American people and the human spirit.
And how Jack Kemp can articulate that vision!
How many times has Jack Kemp talked about tax cuts, enterprise zones, free markets, strong families, and progressive conservatism. What does this mean? It means hope ... It means growth ... It means opportunity ... It means a better America for everyone, from the barrios to the Boroughs, and across every corner of America. It was Jack Kemp with Ronald Reagan who led the fight to reduce taxes. Ronald Reagan and Jack Kemp knew then the simple truth most Americans now recognize; if Americans can keep more of their hard-earned money, they can be trusted to spend and invest it far more wisely than government.
It's a principle Bill Clinton rejects, but time and again Americans have proven Jack Kemp right. Proven that it is their ambition to reach for the American Dream that sparks opportunity, and builds a healthy economy. Tax cuts mean jobs -- new jobs that allow families to achieve the American Dream. When Bob Dole and Jack Kemp announced they would cut taxes by fifteen percent and balance the budget, do you know what Bill Clinton said?
He said: You can't do that. You can't cut taxes like that. You know, Mr. Clinton, you're right. Y can't cut taxes and balance the budget. But we can. Bob Dole and Jack Kemp can. And Bob Dole and Jack Kemp will.
Jack Kemp is a messenger of optimism, a good and decent man. A man of integrity and compassion. A man who cares deeply about all Americans.
It is Jack Kemp who led the fight for enterprise zones so that the party of Lincoln could ensure that the American Dream would be within the grasp of all Americans. Jack Kemp knows that we can't succeed unless we succeed together. Unless all Americans of all races and all religions have access to the American Dream.
That's why the Kemp legacy still echoes so loudly in our great state of New York.As we all know, Jack Kemp played a little football. He started here in San Diego and ended up in Buffalo, where twice he quarterbacked the Bills to a league championship.
In football, quarterbacks have one mission ... to move the ball forward, down the field, and score. Going side to side gets you nowhere.Fumbling, running reverses to fool the people ... Bill Clinton has led this country nowhere in his four years as President. It's time for a better team.
Tonight, we bring together two winners. A team that combines the leadership, experience, integrity and honor of Bob Dole, with the vigor, vision, ideas and ideals of Jack Kemp.
I'm proud to call Jack Kemp my friend. I'm proud to call him a New Yorker. And I and all Americans will be proud to call him Mr. Vice President.
I nominate Jack Kemp as Vice President of the United States.
