Question 1: A question from Maryanne Potopkin of St. Louis, MO
The selection of Kemp seems to have energized delegates and the convention in general. What kind of difference will he make to your region and your local party efforts?
Gloria Hedderman - Wyoming
I've known and loved Jack Kemp for years - maybe even longer than I've known and loved Bob Dole. He's a real visionary - a leader. He sees possibilities when others just see the obstacles. He's a natural optimist and his optimism for America will energize us - not only the delegates at the Conventions but all Americans - except those who are stuck on Clinton and unable to get beyond that.
Hans Von Spakovsky - Georgia
It really has energized the delegates at the convention, and particularly the delegates from Georgia because our current state party chairman worked for Kemp in Washington during the Bush administration. He is what the ticket needed to get some of the younger Republicans who I know involved and interested in the election. He was an apprentice under the president who dominated most of our political youth, Ronald Reagan, and he has an economic, pro-growth, optomistic message that we all have been waiting for. He makes the difference between party activists being leery of an uphill battle this fall and feeling that we can beat Bill Clinton.
Patricia Krueger - New Hampshire
Minimal difference. One thing I can say about a conservative state like New Hampshire is that his pro-life position will be appreciated.
Allan Campbell - Pennsylvania
The selection of Mr. Kemp was an outstanding one for the Republican Party not only in Western Pennsylvania where I live but also for helping to win the election at the national level. There have been several issues which have been on the top of the list of concerns to people who have contacted me. One key issue has been Mr. Dole's age of 73. He needed a candidate for VP who let the voters see him as a possible President of the United States. Kemp has a very extensive record in political life as a member of Congress, head of a think tank, a leading member of the cabinet in a GOP Administration, and as an excellent speaker who has friends and a following all across the country. Because he is l2 years younger than Dole the age issue is partly set aside. I strongly believe that although very few people will vote for a ticket only because of who the VP candidate is, many people will vote against a candidate if their running mate is weak or someone they cannot picture serving in the office of President. Another issue has been that of taxes, economic growth, and the federal deficit. The Dole/Kemp ticket is supply side and spending cut -directed which should appeal to a very large number of financial conservatives.
Ken Blackwell - Ohio
Jack Kemp has the ability to carry the Republican message aross ethnic and income groups with great credibility. The message of hope, growth and opportunity is one that he's carried for the last 26 years. I've worked with him from Harlem to East L. A. and know firsthand that his desire to deliver opportunity to every American is more than rhetoric. He is one of the original contemporary champions of limited government and individual empowerment. His record in this area will make a big difference in Ohio.
Tim Knopp - Oregon
It will make a big difference in Oregon because Jack Kemp is well known and respected for his past service and commitment to principle. It will boost our local party efforts because if the top of the Republican ticket does well it will help our local candidates in their individual races.
Bob Groesbeck - Nevada
I agree. There is no question from the floor that the Kemp selection as the vice-presidential nominee has had a tremendous impact. There is a renewed sense of optimism and energy which I have noticed since Mr. Kemp was selected Saturday. I believe Mr. Kemp's strengths complement those of Senator Dole and add to the ticket I think Mr. Kemp's conservative nature is in keeping with the thought process of most conservative westerners. As a key part of the ticket I believe that Mr. Kemp will assist President Dole in presenting a progressive platform which will meet the needs of the nation as we move into the next century. It is imperative that we address the deficit now and return power, where appropriate, to the states and local authorities which govern the people on a daily basis. Mr. Kemp, I believe, embodies the beliefs referenced above and will assist President-elect Dole in downsizing the federal government, which is in a desperate need of reform.
Allen Quist - Minnesota
The selection of Jack Kemp has had a profound impact on the Upper Midwest. Minnesota, for example, has moved from a sense of resignation over an impending Clinton victory to a genuine sense of optimism over the transformed Republican ticket. Jack Kemp brings a number of needed features to the ticket. He is well known nationally, he is articulate, he looks good and sounds good. He is a man of ideas, of vision, of direction. He complements Bob Dole extremely well.
