DNCDELEGATE FORUM --DAY 3

August 28, 1996

The delegates responded to these other questions:

What role isforeign policy playing in the election?

Compare thesubstance and style of Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Dole?

What wouldhappen if the Democrats won both the Congress and thePresidency?

Has thepoverty around the convention hall shown through Chicago's recent"cosmetic surgery?"

A question from Todd Waters of Portland, ORIs Evan Bayh the next Bill Clinton?

Is Evan Bayh the next Bill Clinton?

The delegates respond:

Sally Beitia, American Falls,IN:
beitiaMany people say that 40-year-old Indiana Governor Evan Bayh is the nextBill Clinton because he is a young tiger in the Democratic party. I wasnot impressed, but then again, I wasn't impressed by Clinton in 1988. Why was he chosen to keynote the convention and what was it he saidagain... does anyone remember?

I personally don't think that Bayh approaches the vision and idealismthat President Clinton shows. President Clinton has come into his own inthe presidency and it's possible that Evan Bayh may do the same.

Jason Bolt, Baton Rouge, LA
boltI do not know the procedure for selecting the keynote speaker, but Ithink he did a good job of highlighting some of President Clinton'sachievements, while also setting the tone for what the President willdiscuss on Thursday night. As far as being the next Bill Clinton, onlytime will tell, but Evan Bayh is a young leader in the Democratic Partywith lots of potential. Who knows where his political life will leadhim?

Jennifer L. Brunner, Columbus,OH
ohiodelegationI sometimes get tired of Democrats (and Republicans, too) talking abouttheir poor roots, trying to make their lives sound like the Americandream, when maybe they should just acknowledge that they were fortunateto have what they had growing up.

To tell you the truth, I was turning into a pumpkin about the time ofEvan Bayh's speech and left before it was concluded. I'm not so sure heis the next Bill Clinton. He has always had ambitious aspirations. Iremember when he was Secretary of State of Indiana. Time will tell. Inthe meantime, I'm putting my money on Al Gore in 2000. Thanks for thequestion.

Clifford Hudson, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
hudsonUnfortunately, I can't tell you why he was selected, other than that hehas shown success as the Governor of Indiana and as a potential leader ofnational stature.

It is important to get further exposure to him, so we can gain a broaderperspective of his personality and capabilities. It is likely thatlittle is gained in the first opportunity for this type of exposure -such as your exposure to Bill Clinton in 1988!

Sue Rochne, Zumbrota, MN
saylorWho knows who will be next in line, BUT Evan is a fine representative ofhis generation and deserved to be showcased. Clinton bored me to death in1988 in Atlanta, but I expect him to give a powerful speech Thursdaynight. Politics is never boring but also never predictable!
