Republican Governor Ed Schafer was easily re-elected in North Dakota, defeating his Democratic opponent 65% to 35%. While Senator Bob Dole was carrying North Dakota, Democrat incumbent Congressman Earl Pomeroy also won re-election, although by a narrower margin than his victory two years ago.

North Dakota Republicans continued to control both houses of the North Dakota Legislature by wide margins and appear to be about to pick up the tax commissioner's office, which has not been won by a Republican since at least the late 1950s. Both current Democrat U.S. Senators and the current Democrat Attorney General are former state tax commissioners.

Incumbent Republicans were re-elected Secretary of State and Public Service Commissioner and the son of the previous 24-year incumbent Republican state Auditor was also elected. Incumbent Democrats were re-elected Attorney General and state Treasurer. As midnight passed, races for state commissioner of agriculture and a seat on the state supreme court were too close to call. In March, Governor Schafer had appointed Mary Maring to serve on the supreme court, and she is seeking re-election.
