As a first time delegate, the Democratic National Convention of 2000 made a spectacular first impression. On this first day of the nomination process for the Democratic presidential candidate, I was in awe by the array of speakers and various forms of media used to share the platform and goals of the Democratic Party.
However, I would have to say that the highlight of the day involved speeches from both Hillary and Bill Clinton. They clearly articulated that the past eight years for economic and social prosperity was created from Democratic ideas and lead by Democratic talent. Both of these politicians examined the improvements made to American society on behalf of their efforts, yet emphasized that there will always be a need to continue "building bridges."
On this first day of the Convention I find that the party has created an incredible opening to this ceremony, while addressing a popular subject in the current elections: the role of minorities in politics. As a Colombian-American female I have been watching closely the distinctions between the Republican and Democratic Parties. Their efforts to present the melting pot of American society has been exceptionally apparent in both Conventions, yet the true intentions of the each party became clear after this first day. By comparing the audiences of both parties, it was evident that there was a greater presence of minorities in the Democratic Convention. Many ethnic backgrounds were represented including African Americans, Latinos and Asian Americans. For me this appeared and felt more natural, as opposed to the Republican Convention which appeared more staged. The feeling of genuine acceptance for all Americans is important to me, and this is primarily why I have and continue to pledge my support to the Democratic Party.
