Dueling Endorsements
New York's First
Congressional District

Return to Race CoverageOct. 27, 2000 -- New York newspapers announced their endorsements in the First District congressional race, coming down in an even split. The New York Times is backing environmental attorney Regina Seltzer, saying "she deserves to win" the uphill battle against Republican fireworks magnate Felix Grucci. The Times cited her experience on the Brookhaven planning board, her energetic grass-roots campaign, and lingering questions about Grucci.

Long Island Newsday endorsed Grucci, whom polls show is in the lead, based on "the good record he has compiled as [Brookhaven] town supervisor." Grucci "could grow into an effective representative for his district," Newsday said.

Both endorsements were published Oct. 27.
