Arizona Endorses her Native Son

February 22, 2000, 10:15 pm EST-- Despite a million-dollar ad campaign and the endorsement of the state's governor, George W. Bush did little to cut into Arizona's support for its senior senator.

John McCain was able to claim a majority of his state's 30 delegates to the Republican national convention.

McCain's win marked the first time he has scored well in a primary not open to indpendent and Democratic voters. During his victory speech, McCain called on Republicans to come to his campaign.

"Don't fear this campaign, my fellow Republicans, join it," McCain told a boisterous crowd. "We are creating a new majority -- a McCain majority."

The vote was also seen as a rebuff of Governor Jane Hull, a Republican who endorsed Bush early in the race. Despite McCain's strong showing in New Hampshire, Hull continued to actively campaign for Bush.

The results, coupled with the narrow win in Michigan, are key to McCain's hopes of garnering his party's nomination. Bush still leads in national polls and was headed to California this evening to campaign for that state's March 7th contest.
