Bush, Gore
Win Big in the Golden State
March 7, 2000, 11:45 pm EST-- Party front-runners George W. Bush and Al
Gore took today's biggest prize, the delegate-rich Golden State.
Despite a campaign push in California, voters rejected Sen. John McCain,
handing Bush all 162 delegates to the national convention. Bush performed
especially well among among conservative voters and those identifying
themselves as members of the religious right. Veterans also preferred
Bush by about 10 percentage points.
Gore meanwhile easily defeated former Sen. Bill Bradley among varied
groups of Democratic voters. His biggest margin, about eight-to-one, was
among Hispanic voters.
Exit polls from a separate vote in California indicate the race is too
close to call. For the first time, the primary also included a vote by
those of any party affiliation, or no affiliation, to cast ballots for
any candidate in a so-called "beauty contest." Only votes from
party members coUnited in the Democratic and Republican races, however.
Californians also had a slate of referendums before them. Voters approved
a ban on gay marriages. The proposition refuses to recognize gay unions,
even when a couple was legally married in another state.
