The Democratic and GOP primaries are scheduled for June 6, 2000
Many characters on the presidential stage hail from New Jersey. Republican
Steve Forbes and Democrat Bill Bradley are from the Garden State, and
Governor Christine Todd Whitman is often mentioned as a possible vice
presidential contender.
New Jersey is seen as a bellwether for the rest of the nation. In the
last century, New Jersey has voted for the winning presidential candidate
all but three times (Ford in 1976, Dewey in 1948 and Charles Evans Hughes
in 1916).
New Jersey will have an exciting race for the seat of three-term Democratic
Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg, who is retiring. Former Wall Street CEO Jon
Corzine and former Gov. James J. Florio are the Democrats' leading contenders.
Democrats in the Senate will have to hold New Jersey and their other "open
seats" in New York and Nevada if they want to cut into the Republicans'
current 55-45 seat majority in the Senate. They breathed a sigh of relief
when Gov. Whitman backed out of what had appeared to be a certain Senate
bid.
