Vladimir Lenin stated, Revolution is impossible as long as the family exists. True to that mandate, Article 35 of The Constitution of the Republic of Cuba declares, The State assigns (the family) its responsibilities and functions essential in the education and formation of new generations. Control belongs not to a childs parents, but to the State. Elians birth father is but a foster parent granted the illusion of raising this child, rightfully born to Fidel Castros Communist Party. In the United States, the
relationship between a father and son is sacred, free from government
intervention. In Cuba, the relationship between Castros totalitarian
regime and Elian is sacred, free from parental involvement. And what kind of father will Castro be to Elian? Our own State Department cites Cuba as one of eight terrorist nations remaining in the world. The United Nations consistently
condemns Cuba for its abject violation of human rights. These findings
are based on overwhelming evidence. For
example, on July 13, 1994, 72 Cubans, including Castro dealt with this by sinking the vessel. This sample of Castros
family values was condemned by the Organization of American
States. Dr. Marta Molina, a psychologist in Cuba before she defected to the United States in 1999, explains that she was forced to deal with any problem involving resistance to the Communist ideology in such a manner as to support the regime regardless of the effect on the patient. If returned to Cuba, Elian would be isolated and cured of the foolish notions of freedom that he learned in the U.S. He would be compelled to join the Pioneros, the youth patrol that indoctrinates children in Communist ideology and encourages members to inform on their parents and neighbors. He would be taught that his
mother, the woman who sacrificed her life to gain Elians freedom,
was a traitor to the State. And who better a witness
to the state of affairs in Cuba than Castros daughter? Alina Fernandez
defected from her fathers country in 1993 disguised as a tourist.
In an interview last month from Spain, she said that Elian would not
be returned to his father but to the regime of her father. Sister Jeanne OLaughlin, O.P., who hosted the meeting in Miami between Elian and his grandmothers last January, was initially a strong supporter of Elians return to his father. Yet after speaking to Elian's grandmothers, OLaughlin changed her mind. She is now adamant in her belief that Elian deserves the right to stay in the United States. Elian belongs with his family that lives under the protection of the unalienable rights that we so often take for granted, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. What do you think? Should we continue to ban trade and investment in Cuba? Or should we try to have stronger relations with our southern neighbor? |
Vladimir Lenin dijo: "
