The North Atlantic Treaty Organization

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was developed to implement the North Atlantic Treaty of 1949 by creating a military to oppose the Soviet military presence in post-World War II eastern Europe. NATO is considered the primary collective defense agreement of the Western powers in opposition to communist forces in Europe.
