The Chinese are now taking the EP-3 plane apart to study its observation equipment. The U.S. did the same thing to a Russian plane in 1976, when a pilot who wanted to become a U.S. resident landed a Soviet jet on U.S. soil. In that case, American officials, board the plane, examined its contents, dismantled the plane, and sent it back to the Soviet Union in crates.
