The last time a race was too close to call was in 1876, when Rutherford B. Hayes narrowly became president after winning Florida with only 94 votes. His election had also been certified by the Florida Secretary of State and overturned by the Florida Supreme Court. Only after several days of uncertainty, Hayes became president when a special election committee voted 8-7 for Hayes along party lines.
