Since the Senate convenes on January 3, Democrats will have a one-vote majority because Al Gore is still Senate president until January 20, seventeen days after the 50-50 Senate starts business and most committees are appointed.

That means if Democrats act fast they could theoretically pass some legislation over Republican objections.
