Kosovo Crisis

On March 24th, 1999, the U.S. and its European allies began a bombing campaign against Serbia, a part of the Yugoslavian Republic.

President Clinton said Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's brutal, systematic effort to remove ethnic Albanians, from their land, dead or alive, posed a threat to world security. The Albanians lived in Kosovo, a province of Serbia which has been under dispute for hundreds of years.

On June 9, the 72nd day of the air war, President Slobodan Milosevic accepted an international peace plan to end the Kosovo conflict and allow nearly 1 million ethnic Albanian refugees to return to what is left of their homes.

NewsHour correspondent Charles Krause was in Kosovo, reporting on the first weeks of relative peace. Here's what it is like to be peacekeeper in the region.
