Student Reporter Explores How the Economy is Affecting Local Businesses
Nicole, a senior from Ridge Community High School in Davenport, Florida, talked to the owners of a car dealership, realty company and restaurant to gauge how the economic decline is impacting her area.
Why this student reported on this issue:
The U.S. economy is in a recession and many Americans have lost jobs or homes.
We are all quite familiar about the decline in our
economy and it has affected all of us, whether it be
a big business, small business, real estate, or a person
looking to buy a house or car, or just trying to pay
the bills.
Everyone’s lifestyle has been flipped around to adjust
to this drastic change – traveling, going out to dinner,
and shopping has all been limited. As a reporter, going
out and getting a chance to sit down with business owners
and workers and really discuss with them the challenges
their businesses or jobs have faced and what actions
they had to take provides a different perspective of
what the economy has done.
Each business has been affected differently depending
on the demand of the consumers, but everything has come
down to there not being enough money circulating.
Nelson Zenteno, senior sales manager for a Ford dealership
in Davenport, tells a student reporter that his sales
are down and that the dealership has decided to use
its advertising budget to host community events and
donate to local charities.
Duncan Owens, the owner of Beef O' Brady's in Davenport,
talks about his slowing business, but says the restaurant
is better positioned than high end restaurants to weather
the economic decline.
Dee Albinson, the owner of Dee's Properties, talks
about her fears that clients will lose their homes because
they can't pay their bills.
Patricia Bliss, a Beef O' Brady's employee, discusses
the changes she has seen in her community because of
the economy, including friends and customers who are
losing jobs or having hours cut.
